What are veneers?
These are customised ceramic facings bonded to the teeth to correct poor appearance and shape. Our veneers are produced with quality materials to provide a reliable alternative to natural teeth problems. We prefer Emax veneers; an upgraded form of porcelain veneers, or composite veneers.
Ceramic technology has improved such that porcelain veneers and composite veneers can be used to design custom-made smiles for patients. The process is very minimal and differs for each patient. If needed, we can initiate a minimal tooth reduction to enable our ceramist to design your smile.
Porcelain veneers
Our choice of porcelain veneers is Emax veneers. They’re designed from Ivoclar Vivadent’s patented Lithium Disilicate, a material that combines high strength, aesthetics, and flexibility.
With Emax veneers, tooth reduction is eliminated as they can be made into very thin layers. They’re usually bonded to the enamel, thus the bond is stronger than bonding with the dentine (inner part of the tooth).
Composite veneers
Composite veneers or direct veneers are produced from composite materials and used to correct misaligned, damaged, or discoloured teeth. Since they’re made by the dentist in the surgery, this dental treatment can be achieved in only one appointment, unlike laboratory-made porcelain veneers which requires 2 or 3 appointments to complete.
For a cost-effective dental solution, composite veneers are good, but may not be aesthetically appealing as porcelain veneers.
Procedure for dental veneers
Before treatment, you’ll consult our veneer specialist who will assess your eligibility for either porcelain or composite veneers, depending on your case. Pictures of your current teeth condition will be taken to initiate the smile design process. To obtain a diagnostic wax-up of your dental solution, impressions of your teeth will be taken. This shows you the outcome of the treatment beforehand.
During your second appointment, the damaged tooth will be minimally prepared. We’ll take and send an impression, your smile design, and custom prescription to our ceramist. You’ll be provided with temporary veneers to begin the restoration process while your permanent composite veneers or porcelain veneers are being produced.
Your final visit will see that your temporary veneers are replaced with the customised veneers. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure you’re comfortable with the veneers. Once this is achieved, your veneers will be bonded to your teeth.
Follow-up visit
You’ll need a few days to get used to the composite or porcelain veneers. Your dentist will arrange a follow-up visit to check the condition of your veneers, oral health, and general performance. Meanwhile, you’ll have to maintain good dental hygiene. Your dentist will advise you.
Generally, every 1 in 5 or 8 teeth veneered or crowned, after many years may require root canal treatment. Dental veneers rarely get fractured or debonded. Should it happen, further treatment becomes necessary.
